New Podcast! Honoring the lives of Jon & Kortney

We have a new podcast up!  National Pro-Life Youth Podcast Episode 006!  On this episode we honor the lives of Jon Scharfenberger and Kortney Blythe Gordon.  Kortney died in a fatal car crash October 8th while Jon died on October 18th from injuries procured from that crash.  Both were  former Students for Life staffers.  Kortney was also a long time Rock For Life volunteer and at one time a full-time staffer as well.  Both died doing what they love – saving babies.

Erik and Kristan as well as guests Megan and Kierstin (pro-life college students) share stories of how Kortney and Jon made differences in people’s lives.  Make sure to help us honor Jon and Kortney’s lives by doing all that we can to save babies, help pregnant mother’s in need and also by encouraging and inspiring the next generation to end abortion in our lifetimes!

If you have any stories you would like to share about Jon or Kortney you can email them to jon@studentsforlife.org or kgordon@studentsforlife.org.  Thanks.

Another friend of ours has passed away – please do what you can to help

I am really saddened to share the very unfortunate news that another one of our friends in the fight for life has passed away.  Jon Scharfenberger, Students for Life’s Pregnant on Campus Coordinator passed away Tuesday morning (October 18th) due to complications from the car crash that took the lives of Kortney Blythe Gordon, her preborn little girl Sophy Gordon as well as the driver of the other car.  Please pray for Jon’s family as well as the Students for Life staff.

If you are interested in attending a memorial service for Jon, his family will be receiving visitors at a viewing from 2:00 – 4:00pm and 7:00 – 9:00pm this Friday, October 21st, at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick, New York at 17 Oakland Avenue.

Students for Life is accepting donations for Jon’s burial and memorial costs.  If you would like to make a donation to help out Jon’s family during this time of need click here.  Please prayerfully consider making a donation. Thank you.

A friend of ours is in critical condition – please pray

Earlier this week I informed you of the passing away of a former Rock For Life staffer and great friend Kortney Blythe Gordon and her preborn child, Sophy.  Thanks to everyone for your prayers, your words of support and encouragement and also your financial contributions.  Her husband, Ben and their families are deeply moved by all of this.  Students for Life announced that all of the funeral expenses have been paid for.  Praise God!

Unfortunately we still need your prayers.  Jon Scharfenberger, Students for Life’s Campus Support Coordinator and Pregnant on Campus Coordinator is in critical condition.  Jon was in the passenger seat of the vehicle Kortney was driving.  He has been showing some improvement recently but is still in bad shape.  Please keep him, his recovery and his family in your prayers.  Click here for the latest on his condition and check back there for updates.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jon while filming a promotion for the Pregnant on Campus initiative.  Jon is a bright young man with a strong future in the pro-life movement.  Let’s keep praying for a full recovery.

Tomorrow is Kortney & Sophys funeral service in Matthews, North Carolina from 11:30 -2:00 pm.  You can RSVP here.  There will also be a memorial service in Northern Virginia on Oct. 22nd.  Click here to RSVP.  Finally, there will be a prayer vigil at a Washington, DC Planned Parenthood abortion facility in honor of Kortney and Sophy this Saturday from 11:00 – 12:00 pm.  Kortney prayed and sidewalk counseled at this abortion facility often.  Click here to RSVP.

We have lost a loved one

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to inform you that a friend of mine, a fellow advocate for preborn human rights, and a former full-time Rock For Life staffer Kortney Blythe Gordon and her preborn little girl Sophy passed away in a car crash late Saturday night.

Please pray for her husband, Ben and their families. They need our prayers during this time as they grieve their loss.

Also, prayerfully consider making a donation to help pay for the burial costs of Kortney and Sophy. Students for Life is taking up an online collection that is tax-deductible. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Blythe and Gordon families. Click here to make a donation.

The driver of the other vehicle also passed away.  There is another Students for Life staff person involved in the car crash who is in critical condition.  Please pray for him and his family as well.

I have so many fond memories of Kortney.  I remember the first time I met her.  She drove all the way up from Charlotte to Washington, DC to take part in some pro-life visibility events we were hosting at the March for Women’s Lives in the Spring of 2004.  I could tell right away that she had a great heart for the preborn and would be a rising star in the pro-life movement.  She had already been involved running a chapter in Charlotte but I knew immediately I wanted to get her more involved with Rock For Life!

Later that year she made the same drive to join our prayerful protest of a Vote for Change tour stop in Washington, DC.  She brought two fellow classmates of Montreat (the college she was attending at the time).  What was impressive to me about that trip is that she left Montreat immediately after a class.  Her and her friends made our event just in time then had to leave right after the event in order to make a class the next morning to take a major test.  Kortney said she was going to study on the way down. I thought she was crazy!

That to me was highly unusual, impressive and really set the tone of my future involvement with Kortney.  She was a tireless advocate for the preborn.  She was extremely intelligent, a great communicator and organizer.  For proof you can hear some of our archived Rock For Life Netcasts.  Kortney was friendly, loved our Lord, and didn’t have a mean bone in her body.  She always had a smile on her face and a kind word to say.

Kortney did an amazing job as a Rock For Life chapter leader and as the Rock For Life chapter coordinator.  She did amazing work with Survivors and Students for Life.  The pro-life movement has lost a rising star.  She will be missed big time.

Bryan Kemper with Stand True / Priests for Life has dedicated this year’s Pro-Life Day of Student Solidarity to Kortney and Sophy.  The Rev. Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition is dedicating the Voices from the Womb project to Kortney and Sophy as well.  They were scheduled to be a feature participant.

Ben, our prayers are with you and our prayers are with the Blythe and Gordon families.  Kortney, we miss you.  Sophy, wish we could have met you.
